The European Urban Initiative (EUI) has launched its third call for proposals with a substantial budget of €90 million from the European Regional Development Fund.

The third call aims to move cities towards a greener and more digital future. Cities across the EU are invited to submit projects focusing on either Energy transition or Technology in cities.

With up to €5 million available per selected project and 80% co-funding from the European Regional Development Fund, this is a unique opportunity for cities to embrace innovation. The deadline for proposals is 14 October 2024.

The call is open to all EU cities, with the exception of those already supported in previous EUI-IA calls (EUI-IA calls 1 and 2).

Under the Energy transition theme, cities will experiment with innovative solutions for cleaner and more affordable energy systems. Meanwhile, the Technology in cities category aims to explore digital solutions for better public services and urban governance.

What the European Commission and the EUI Entrusted Entity say about the third call for proposals

Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira said: “Cities act as centres for innovation and play a vital role in propelling the green and digital transitions on the ground. With this third EUI call for proposals, we are giving cities an opportunity to explore the potential of emerging technologies in the energy sector and beyond, leading the way to a climate-neutral Europe. Urban areas of all sizes will not be left behind – we will ensure that they innovate, moving with the times, to become more inclusive and accessible to all Europeans.”

Xavier Bertrand, President of the Hauts-de-France Region, the EUI Entrusted Entity said: "European cities are key players in territorial innovation: their mobilisation, commitment and creativity make it possible to respond to the major challenges of the transitions. With the launch of the 3rd call for proposals focusing on energy and digital transitions, the European Urban Initiative supports new and innovative solutions from European cities in these areas. It is a real opportunity to finance the European resilience capabilities of our territories, which the Hauts-de-France Region supports, encourages and promotes through its European urban commitment".
