European cities stand at a critical juncture, confronting escalating socioeconomic and environmental challenges while grappling with a significant finance gap to address these issues. Traditional funding mechanisms, compounded by constrained public funding and limited private sector participation, are often not sufficient for cities to meet the scale of investment needed. In response, cities are turning to new and innovative financial schemes as a solution.

European cities have signalled their strong need on consolidating knowledge and practice on multilevel governance and cooperation for supporting sustainable urban development.

As part of the European Week of Regions and Cities 2024, the European Urban Initiative (EUI) in collaboration with the Région Hauts-de-France, Lille European Metropole and Amiens Metropole, organised a Capacity Building workshop on the role of city-region collaboration in developing and fostering an innovation ecosystem and unlocking inclusive economic growth.
